De "winter periode" is bijna voorbij en men is van 's morgens vroeg tot 's avonds laat bezig met het planten van palmbomen, diverse soorten bomen en planten. Zolang we in JBR wonen hebben we tegen lege plantenbakken aangekeken, men zegt dat er alleen in de winter periode geplant wordt gezien de lagere temperaturen. De nieuwe aanwas wordt gewoon in de zandgrond geplaatst en om de groei te bevorderen maakt men gebruik van "koeimest". Een bewateringssysteem zorgt ervoor dat de planten dagelijks worden besproeit. Afgelopen weekend heeft men bij het zwembad nieuwe Dade (dadel-Phoenix dactylifera) palmbomen geplant. Did you know that over 40 million palm trees yield about 110 varieties of dates in the UAE? Varieties such as the Barhi, Hilali, Khalas, Lou lou and Makhtoumi are popular in the UAE and have rich, delicate flavours and taste different when fresh and dry.
Inmiddels zijn ook alle fonteinen handmatig (steen voor steen) schoongemaakt, door de afgelopen zandstormen is er veel zand in terecht gekomen wat eerst verwijderd moest worden. Ofschoon men nog lang niet klaar is begint het overdag en in de avonduren er al een stuk gezelliger uit te zien.

450 additional radars to be installed on Dubai roads

Dubai: Police will soon install 450 new radars on Dubai roads, the chief of Dubai Police revealed.

Currently, there are 350 radars on Dubai roads and there will be an additional 450 radars on the roads to deter speeding and reckless driving. The announcement came as part of a coordination meeting between Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Chief of Dubai Police held the meeting with Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Lieutenant General Dahi stressed the importance of the meeting, especially since the two parties are strongly connected to serving society. He pointed out the importance of increasing radars on the roads. He said Dubai Police will install the radars to deter reckless driving.

Hot weather is settling in for summer


Al Ain: The present hot and hazy spell of weather is likely to continue during the holiday period, and a rise in the temperature all over the emirates is expected, say forecasters.

An official of the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said foggy conditions are also expected in some areas early in the morning.

Conditions will also be windy for the next 48 hours, kicking up dust in some areas. The sea could be slightly rough on Friday afternoon, with waves of two to three feet high offshore.

The forecaster said summery conditions have gradually been setting in, with daytime temperatures rising. Over the last few days, the maximum temperature has risen from 29 degrees Celsius to 39C in Al Ain. In other cities, the temperature is little less hot but can still cause heat exhaustion.

The official warned people planning desert trips during the holiday, saying they must take protection with them. "We are expecting dusty conditions and desert trips should be avoided," he noted.

According to the NCMS forecast, humidity will remain between 75 to 90 per cent across the emirates. Yesterday, Al Ain was the hottest city in the country at 40C in the afternoon. In Dubai and other cities the maximum ranged from 32 to 35C.

Happy Easter

Pasen valt dit jaar op zondag 23 en maandag 24 maart en is een christelijke feestdag. Men viert de opstanding van Jezus uit de dood nadat hij op Goede Vrijdag gestorven is. Pasen is niet elk jaar op de zelfde (zon)dag, maar op de eerste zondag die volgt op de volle maan na het begin van de lente. Pasen is ook een lentefeest. Na de koude winter waarin alle voedsel van het vorige jaar is opgegeten gaat de natuur opnieuw beginnen. Dieren krijgen jongen, bomen en bloemen gaan bloeien, kuikens komen uit hun ei. Het ei is een symbool van nieuw leven. Ook in Dubai kom je in de winkels en supermarkten lentekuikentjes en paaseieren tegen.

De laatste keer dat wij in Nederland waren hebben wij van Debbie diverse paas spullen gekregen en inmiddels lopen er allemaal "kuikentjes" door ons appartement.

Public Holiday

Holiday for Prophet's birthday on Thursday

Abu Dhabi: The public sector will get a one-day holiday on Thursday to mark the birthday of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), it was announced on Monday.

Dr Khalifa Bakheet Al Falasi, Minister of State and Chairman of the Civil Services Department, issued a decision that public sector employees will get a holiday for one day to celebrate the Prophet's [PBUH] birthday.

Al Falasi congratulated President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Their Highnesses the Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the emirates, on the occasion.

Who is the Prophet Muhammad?
Muhammad pbuh was born in Makkah in the year 570. Since his father died before his birth and his mother died shortly thereafter, he was raised by his uncle who was from the respected tribe of Quraysh. He was raised illiterate, unable to read or write, and remained so till his death. His people, before his mission as a prophet, were ignorant of science and most of them were illiterate. As he grew up, he became known to be truthful, honest, trustworthy, generous, and sincere. He was so trustworthy that they called him the Trustworthy. Muhammad pbuh was very religious, and he had long detested the decadence and idolatry of his society.

At the age of forty, Muhammad pbuh received his first revelation from God through the Angel Gabriel. The revelations continued for twenty-three years, and they are collectively known as the Quran.

As soon as he began to recite the Quran and to preach the truth which God had revealed to him, he and his small group of followers suffered persecution from unbelievers. The persecution grew so fierce that in the year 622 God gave them the command to emigrate. This emigration from Makkah to the city of Madinah, some 260 miles to the north, marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar.

After several years, Muhammad pbuh and his followers were able to return to Makkah, where they forgave their enemies. Before Muhammad pbuh died, at the age of sixty-three, the greater part of the Arabian Peninsula had become Muslim, and within a century of his death, Islam had spread to Spain in the West and as far East as China. Among the reasons for the rapid and peaceful spread of Islam was the truth and clarity of its doctrine. Islam calls for faith in only one God, Who is the only one worthy of worship.

The Prophet Muhammad pbuh was a perfect example of an honest, just, merciful, compassionate, truthful, and brave human being. Though he was a man, he was far removed from all evil characteristics and strove solely for the sake of God and His reward in the Hereafter. Moreover, in all his actions and dealings, he was ever mindful and fearful of God.

Orange Ball party - Muscat Oman

Samen met Maarten, Joke en Bas zijn we donderdag 13 maart naar Muscat toegegaan waar we zijn uitgenodigd om bij het "Orange Ball 2008" aanwezig te zijn. KLM is o.a. één van de hoofdsponsoren. Het Oranjebal is georganiseerd door "Het Holland Comité Oman" en is een gezelligheidsvereniging voor en door de Nederlanders en Nederlandstaligen in Oman. Zij organiseren diverse activiteiten waar vaak ook niet Nederlanders welkom zijn.

Met Oman Air zijn we naar Muscat gevlogen en de vliegtijd bedraagt ongeveer 45 minuten. Op de luchthaven lieten Maarten, Irene en Bas nog even de Delfts blauwe versieringen zien, het thema van het Oranje ball is namelijk "Delfts Blauw". Na aankomst zijn we welkom geheten door Venu Vasudevan, de KLM country manager in Oman. Met een gereserveerde MPV taxi zijn we naar het "Al Falaj Hotel" gebracht op ongeveer een half uurtje rijden van de luchthaven. Marcel is achterin gaan zitten en heeft onderweg foto's zitten maken.
De rest van de middag kon iedereen zijn eigen gang gaan. Wij zijn met een taxi de autenthieke Souk (Mutrah) aan de haven gaan bezoeken. De taxi's hebben geen meters dus moet je eerst afspraken maken over de prijs. Aangekomen bij de Souk waren al vele winkeltjes gesloten en moesten we wachten tot 4 uur totdat de Souk weer geopend werd. In de tussentijd hebben we rustig rondgelopen in de haven en vonden we toch nog een enkele geopende winkels. Na een hapje gegeten en wat foto's gemaakt te hebben was het inmiddels al 4 uur en zijn we nogmaals door vele smalle straten en steegjes gelopen. Voor Marcel hebben een authentieke hoed gekocht. In de taxi heeft hij deze op zijn hoofd gezet en kreeg meteen een goedkeuring van de chauffeur en nogmaals bij aankomst van het hotel door een andere taxi chauffeur. Maarten en Bas zaten gezellig bij het zwembad een pilsje te drinken, we zijn gezellig aangeschoven en hebben nog even zitten bijpraten.

Om 20:00 uur, nadat we ons allen hebben omgekleed, zijn we naar het "Intercontinental Hotel" gebracht waar het Orange Ball in de tuin werd gehouden. We werden ontvangen met een glaasje champagne waarna we ons hebben laten fotograveren tegen een Delfts blauwe achtergrond. De enorme tuin was gezellig aangekleed met lounge banken, verlichte bloembakken en typische Nederlandse producten in Delft blauw zoals je op de foto's kunt zien. Na de officieële openings speech door de Nederlandse ambassadrice in Oman mochten we plaatsnemen aan de prachtig opgemaakte tafels voor het diner. Na het diner was er een optreden van een Nederlandse DJ vergezeld door een aantal artiesten. Ondanks de technische problemen met de apparatuur stond de dansvloer regelmatig vol en is het een gezellige avond geworden. Voor de laatste keer op de dansvloer voordat de muziek stopt. De volgende ochtend zijn we na het ontbijt weer terug gebracht naar de luchthaven en na nog even in de lounge gezeten te hebben zijn we terruggevlogen naar Dubai. Ondanks dat het erg kort was hebben we het erg gezellig gehad.

Ban on Skype

Ban on VoIP services to continue, says TRA

Abu Dhabi: The ban on Skype and other Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services in the UAE will continue and these services will be allowed only through licensed telecommunication operators - etisalat and du, a top Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) official said on Sunday.

"VoIP for everyone is still under consultation. No timeframe can be set on when that's going to be allowed," TRA director general-board member, Mohammad N. Al Ganem, told Gulf News on the sidelines of a TRA event here.

"We are doing a lot of consultation and we are looking into what's happening around the world with regard to VoIP. However, we are taking it very seriously," Al Ganem said.

He said the industry is being consulted on the issue. "Hopefully, once we finish with the industry consultation, we will look at it," Al Ganem added.

As per prevailing TRA policy, all VoIP services that use public internet are prohibited.
